When it comes to interviewing, practice may not always make perfect, but it can certainly increase your chances of getting the job. That's especially true for case interviews—an interviewing technique that is pretty much mandatory in the consulting industry, and catching on in other industries too.
While many candidates spend hours practicing their answers to questions such as "tell me about your biggest weakness," it can be tempting to overlook case interview preparation. The reason: because the[...] Read More...

We've talked before about using social media tools to find a job. But usually, that means the Big Three: Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace.
Just kidding! Of course, the (arguably) best site for job search social media is LinkedIn. And it's undoubtedly the best place for explicating posting your resume and qualifications, since you're not likely to have any photos of you drinking nearby, and you have more than 180 characters to describe your job duties.
But what about Pinterest, a newly, wildly popular[...] Read More >>

Ever feel like you spend all your time in the conference room?
Well, if you're high up on the executive food chain, you might.
A new study of CEOs shows that 18 of their average 55-hour work weeks are spent at roundtables—and a mere 6 spent at their actual desks, working alone.
The rest of the work week breakdown is as follows: 2 hours on phone calls, 2 on conference calls, 2 on public events, 5 on business meals, and 20 on "miscellaneous," which includes travel back and forth between activities,[...] Read More >>

According to a University of Southern California study to be published later this month, the high stress and long hours of a job in investment banking can lead to "insomnia, alcoholism, heart palpitations, eating disorders, and an explosive temper." However, a stressful and demanding job in banking (or in any other industry for that matter) can also lead to a healthy life.An important part of the USC study, which followed numerous bankers over a 10-year period, found that "by the sixth year, the[...] Read More >>

Happy Valentine's day, Vault readers!
In honor of this happiest (or most miserable) of holidays, here's a blast from the past—a little office lovin' advice from the authors of Office Mate, a book on "finding and managing romance on the job."
We offer this point of view today because, for the whole rest of the year, we're telling you not to flirt with coworkers. You've already had it drilled into your head that it's not the safest idea, what with all the sexual harrassment seminars and warnings from[...] Read More >>

Dear Vault readers,
You may have caught our post on Joe Maddalone and his ill-fated introduction email to Morgan Stanley's CEO.
Well one person definitely missed it: the NYU undergrad who wrote this epic fail of a cover letter to JP Morgan. In a plea for a summer analyst position, the applicant mentioned his GPA as well as bench pressing abilities. The end result was so bad that a BofA/Merrill Lynch director forwarded it to his entire team with a promise to buy for drinks "for the first analyst to[...] Read More >>

It goes without saying that unpaid internships offer no salaries or benefits.
But did you know that unpaid interns have no basic protections under labor laws?
This is something a lot of kids learn the hard way. I certainly did. I once worked a completely unpaid internship for three months, mainly for one special reward: a reference (upon successful completion of the internship) from the owner of the company, an influential film producer.
Things were going great, until Intern Appreciation Night (oh,[...] Read More >>

Rarely is someone with an economics degree from Harvard considered to be the underdog. Even rarer is someone with an economics degree from Harvard seen playing professional basketball. Which is why Jeremy Lin’s sudden rise from obscurity to starting lineup of the NBA’s New York Knicks has been such a surprise. As a result, the media has pounced on Lin’s story—and thankfully so. Due to all the coverage of Lin in the past 48 hours since his back-to-back double-figure scoring outings, we now know that[...] Read More >>

The death of Steve Jobs might have brought about the end of an era: that of the personality cult.
For the last few years, big personalities and small (initially, at least) companies have dominated the market. Tech jobs—and culture—have created a new idea-central workplace, with an explosion of social media tools that's prompted us to constantly share them. And Steve Jobs, well, he brought about the notion that, to be successful, everybody needs to be the guy with the big, innovative ideas, magnetic[...] Read More >>

Xuedan Wang, a former intern at Harper's Bazaar, worked for the magazine from August 2011 to December 2011. The position was full time, with hours topping out at 55 hours per week, but Wang received no payment for her labor. Now, the former intern is suing the parent company, Hearst, for a violation of federal and state wage and hour laws.
Let's take a look at her case, and the current laws governing unpaid internships. The Department of Labor laws clearly states that an unpaid internship should[...] Read More >>
